The Filipina tandem of Sisi Rondina and Bernadeth Pons fell short against Indonesia, as SEA Games women's beach volleyball got underway the converted Subic Bay Tennis Court on Friday.
Dhita Juliana and Putu Utami won 21-18, 16-21, 15-13 to frustrate the hometown team.
Rondina and Pons took a 13-12 lead in the third set but was denied by the Indonesians, who scored three straight to escape with a first victory.
Dzi Gervacio and Dji Rodriguez had little luck in their match against Indonesia, too, falling to Desi Ratnasari and Allysah Mutakharah 21-14, 21-16.
“Naga-adjust pa kami. This is the first real tournament that we partnered,” Gervacio said. “Wala pa masyado ‘yung chemistry at intensity pero ngayong na-experience na namin, next game alam na namin.”
The last time the Philippines secured a medal in beach volleyball — courtesy of Heidi Ilustre and Diane Pascua's bronze — was when the country hosted in 2005.
The Philippines next takes on Vietnam on Sunday.
