NCAA: Women’s champ Arellano, finalist San Beda off to winning start

Arellano University showed its championship mettle in the second and third sets to down Jose Rizal University 25-15, 25-22, 25-22 on Friday to open its title-retention bid in NCAA women's volleyball at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

After dominating the opening set, the Lady Chiefs, eyeing a fourth trophy overall, fended off a serious challenge put up by the Lady Bombers in the next two.

In the second game, San Beda rallied to down Perpetual Help 25-21, 24-26, 20-25, 26-24, 15-12.

In Season 93, Arellano downed San Beda for the title.

Regine Arocha, last year’s finals MVP, led the way for Arellano with 11 points and Nicole Ebuen scattered 10 hits, while Sarah Princess Verutiao did the facilitating with 22 excellent sets to help lift the Legarda-based school to the win.

Arellano made it a triple victory after prevailing in the men’s side 25-21, 25-18, 25-21, as well as in the juniors’ division 25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 25-20, earlier.

Christian dela Paz registered 14 points, including 11 on spikes to bolster the Chiefs’ title bid after coming one game close to achieving it following a second-place performance behind eventual champion Perpetual Help a season ago.
