MANILA -- House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano stressed that there was no favoritism in favor of the Villar family when it was decided to hold the bowling matches of the upcoming Southeast Asian Games in Star Mall.
Cayetano, chairman of the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Committee (PHISGOC) Foundation Inc., said the bowling venue was selected by sports officials based on international standards.
He added that the bowling center itself is not even owned by the Villars.
”I asked (Pubic Works and Highways) Secretary Mark, he didn't even know na merong bowling sa Star Mall. So I had my staff check. It's the POC (Philippine Olympic Committee) and the competition managers who scout all of these because they have to make sure that the international federation will say yes because kailangan ng regulation," Cayetano said, adding that the bowling center at Star Mall is owned by Puyat Sports.
"At alam naman natin pagdating sa Pilipinas, Puyat Sports is a one of the gold standards if not the gold standard," he said.
Cayetano also said it was the only venue with 20 lanes with proper accreditation.
"Whether it was in the Ayala Malls or in SM, wherever the venue, the people that are needing the venue and the competition manager will look which one fits the international requirement," said Cayetano.
“The Villars never asked me to use any of their facilities. In fact, if you didn't bring it up, I wouldn't know all of these details. What I make sure of is walang corruption, walang favoritism, walang execessive, walang overprice." -- With a report from RG Cruz, ABS-CBN News
