MANILA, Philippines – League-leading F2 Logistics will put its spotless record on the line when it battles another tough contender in Cignal in the Chooks-to-Go Philippine Superliga (PSL) Grand Prix on Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Game time is at 7 p.m., with the Cargo Movers looking to extend their unbeaten streak to six games and stay comfortably at the top of the league standings.
Meanwhile, Generika-Ayala will try to bolster its own 2-4 card when it takes on lowly Victoria Sports-UST (1-4) in the 4:15 curtain-raiser.
F2 Logistics already owns a statement victory over Petron, before reeling off four more wins against Sta. Lucia, Cocolife, Generika-Ayala, and Victoria Sports-UST. True to form, however, head coach Ramil de Jesus has warned that the road only gets tougher for the Cargo Movers.
"It's still a long way to go," he warned, noting that they have yet to face defending champion Foton.
"While sweeping the eliminations is our main goal, we know that we still have a lot of things to work on and improve. This is a tough league," he added. "You really have to work hard if you want to win."
De Jesus is wary of Cignal, which is anchored by a pair of middle blockers in Beth Carey of Australia and Alexis Matthews of the United States, along with Japanese libero Mami Miyashita at the backline.
The HD Spikers suffered a pair of setbacks to Petron and Cocolife, but have since recovered through a straight-sets conquest of Iriga City last week to take their record to 2-3.
In that game against the Lady Oragons, Rachel Anne Daquis sat out but Jovelyn Gonzaga, Paneng Mercado and Royse Tubino stepped up to help Carey and Matthews in asserting their dominance.
"Hopefully, we can sustain our winning character," said Cignal coach George Pascua. "I always tell the team that we are a champion team. We're being expected to play like one."
"So we have to work hard every game and live above those expectations," he added.
Pascua said that for them to pull off an upset against F2 Logistics, they need to stop the effective middle game of Abigail Maraño and Majoy Baron, and limit the attacks of imports Kennedy Bryan and Maria Jose Perez.
"F2 is a very good team," said Pascua. "You have to be at your best defensively for you to win."
