The Philippine national football team failed to get past Syria in Round 2 of the joint qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup and 2023 AFC Asian Cup.
The Azkals threatened all throughout the match but Syria was to be a hard team to beat as the latter walked away with a 1-0 win in the match that took place in Dubai.
It was a better performance by the Philippine side compared to their 5-2 defeat to Syria last September at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City.
It was Ward Al Salama who scored the lone goal for Syria in the 23rd minute.
The Azkals came into the match brimming with confidence following a 2-1 win over the Maldives and a 2-1 toppling of China.
Syria remained on top of Group A with 15 points, while the Azkals stay with 7 points.
