MANILA -- (UPDATED) The National University (NU) Pep Squad has toppled Adamson University to reclaim the UAAP Cheerdance crown on Saturday before a jampacked crowd at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Sampaloc-based squad came "back from the dead" with a Dia de los Muertos-themed routine to garner a total of 711 points and win their fifth title overall, a year after being ousted by Adamson.
With the win, NU also pocketed a total of P80,000 in cash prize.
It was a sweet victory for the NU Pep Squad, which failed to finish in the top three last year after winning four straight titles.
"Napamahal na sa 'min 'yung championship for 4 years. Ngayon nasa amin na ito ulit," said NU Pep Squad coach Ghicka Bernabe
She added that losing the title last year only fueled their desire to make a comeback this season.
"Sa team, 'di namin ginagamit 'yung word na frustration. Ayaw na namin maramdaman 'yung nangyari last year," Bernabe said.
The Far Eastern University (FEU) Cheering Squad who danced to the groove of '70s music garnered 655.5 points. This was good enough for second place, which came with a P55,000 prize.
Last season's champions, the Adamson Pep Squad, had to settle for third this year with 638.5 points and a P40,000 prize.
The UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe failed to get a podium finish this year and finished fourth. University of the East and University of the Philippines followed at fifth and sixth place, respectively.
Ateneo de Manila University came in at seventh, followed by De La Salle University in eighth place. -- with a report from Karl Cedric Basco, ABS-CBN News
