MANILA, Philippines – Petron became the first team to defeat Foton in the 2017 Philippine Superliga (PSL) Grand Prix, notching a 25-21, 25-22, 12-25, 25-20 win over the defending champions on Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
American import Lindsay Stalzer came back to haunt her former team, firing 23 points on 20 attacks, as the Blaze Spikers handed the Tornadoes their first loss in five games.
Foton's other import, Hillary Hurley, was also superb as she scored 20 points, including 15 kills and four service aces.
"Sobra naming inaral ito," said Petron coach Shaq delos Santos, whose team won its second straight game. "'Yun naman kasi ang kailangan, and lahat naman ng kalaban namin, grabe din namin inaaral."
Petron won the first two sets handily, before slumping in the third frame where they put up a measly 12 points and had no answer for Foton's Sara Klisura.
"Number one problem namin ay receive," said delos Santos, when asked what went wrong for them in Set 3.
The Blaze Spikers were quick to recover, securing the fourth set behind a crosscourt smash from Hurley.
"Sabi ko nga sa kanila, kalimutan niyo na 'yung third set," said delos Santos. "Ang kailangang nasa mind natin ay kung ano ang ginawa natin sa first two sets."
Klisura led all scorers with 29 points, 24 of which came off attacks. But Foton's other import, Dragana Perunicic, mustered only six markers, and Jaja Santiago tallied 11 points but converted only seven of her 30 attempts.
Foton dropped to 4-1, while Petron improved to 5-1 in the PSL Grand Prix.
