MANILA, Philippines – Boxing coach Freddie Roach said that Manny Pacquiao reverted to his old way of fighting while facing Juan Manuel Marquez.
"Manny started moving into right hands, just like we worked on not doing. He fell right back into the old way he fought this guy. I was afraid of that,” Roach said in Sports Illustrated.
Roach said that Marquez’s fighting style somehow dictated the tempo of the fight.
He added that Marquez’s footwork placed the Mexican at an advantage against Pacquiao.
“The way he moves, he dictates Manny to move into that right hand. And he did it all night long. His footwork is excellent. That was his biggest advantage in the fight," said Roach.
Fortunately, Pacquiao was able to rack enough points to pull off a majority decision against Marquez.
The verdict, however, was seen by several boxing observers as controversial.
Roach himself believes that Marquez deserves a rematch.
“You know, it wouldn't be right if we didn't give him a rematch. It would be [expletive] if we didn't," he said.
