(UPDATED) Meralco was all grit and tenacity in pulling off an improbable 108-103 overtime win to unseat a second-seeded Phoenix in the PBA Governors Cup on Friday night at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Bolts had to fight from 16 points down in the do-or-die quarterfinals match to eliminate the Fuel Masters and set a semifinal joust with the Alaska Aces.
Allen Durham had 32 points to go with his 21 rebounds and 9 assists to help Meralco overcome the Eugene Phelps-led Phoenix.
Baser Amer added 26 markers, firing 2 of their 5 three-pointers in the extra 5 minutes to complete the Bolts’ stunning comeback.
It was a sweet victory for Meralco, which saw its campaign sputter at the onset of the conference with a poor 1-6 record.
“What a hill we climbed to get into this point,” said Bolts coach Norman Black. "I’m really happy for my players.”
Phoenix was in command for 3 quarters until Meralco unleashed a telling 10-0 run that had the Fuel Masters reeling, 94-91.
Jason Perkins tied the count to send the game into overtime, but the Bolts took over in the extra 5 minutes.
“That was a crazy game, hats off to Phoenix they were a great team. But we came here to show it,” said Durham.
Perkins finished with 24 points, while Phelps had 18 points and 23 rebounds.
