MANILA, Philippines - Arellano University and University of San Carlos advanced to the Sweet 16 National Finals of the 2009 Philippine Collegiate Champions League after hurdling separate opponents Friday in the Visayas-Mindanao zonal phase in Bacolod.
The Chiefs, who placed fifth in the NCAA, trounced host West Negros U, 79-67, while the Warriors walloped Mindanao regional champion Holy Trinity College, 86-63.
Both squads will join UAAP champion Ateneo, NCAA titlist San Sebastian, University of the East, San Beda, Jose Rizal U, Far Eastern U, University of Santo Tomas, Letran and CESAFI winner University of the Visayas in the Sweet 16 set Nov. 23 in Manila.
Arellano finished the single round elimination with a 3-0 record. UV was 2-1, the Mustangs, the Visayas regional winners, 1-2 and Holy Trinity 0-3.
Meanwhile, NAASCU champion San Sebastian College Recoletos de Cavite trounced CESAFI third-placer University of San Jose-Recoletos, 86-77, Friday to open the Cebu version of the Vis-Min zonals at the Cebu City Coliseum.
In a battle of sister schools, the Baycats drew 21 points from NAASCU MVP Jun Gracilla.
The Green Archers, the 2008 champions, try to earn a finals seat at the Naga City zonal games starting Nov. 12. Also competing are the St. Francis of Assisi Doves, University of Nueva Caceres Greyhounds and the NCAA-South champion.
The Manila zonal games will start Nov. 10 with Mapua Cardinals, NCAA sixth placer, leading seven other teams – the University of Manila Hawks, Universal Colleges Dragons, La Consolacion College Blue Royals, Central Colleges of the Philippines Bobcats, Lyceum of Subic Bay Cats, the eventual ISSA champion and NCAA-South runner-up.
