MANILA, Philippines – Boxing legend Oscar de la Hoya believes Juan Manuel Marquez will have a hard time against Manny Pacquiao, saying that the Filipino champion’s boxing skills are now in a whole different level now.
De la Hoya, who visited Pacquiao at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, California, said the Filipino boxing superstar has fought quality opponents.
"It's a whole different level because Manny's been beating guys who are maybe superstars. Guys like [Miguel] Cotto, guys like myself, guys like [Shane] Mosley,” said De la Hoya.
Marquez’s opponents, in comparison, looked like regular boxers, said De la Hoya.
“Marquez has been beating guys that are just ordinary," he said.
De la Hoya fought but lost to Pacquiao in 2008.
His corner decided to throw in the towel after being dominated by the fleet-footed Filipino in 8 rounds.
He is now a full-time boxing promoter and is the head of Golden Boy Promotions (GBP).
Pacquiao is set to battle Marquez for the third time on Saturday (Sunday in Manila).
At stake is Pacquiao’s WBO welterweight title.
The fight will take place at a 144-pound catchweight. -- With a report from Dyan Castillejo, ABS-CBN News
