Will the “interim” team hastily formed to replace the suspended Soccsksargen Marlins be able to turn around the club’s fortunes in the ongoing MPBL Lakan Cup?

From the looks of it, it's not going to change any time soon as the Marlins continued their free fall with a 115-71 loss to Pampanga Lanterns on Tuesday.

Players, coaching staff and management members suspected of game-fixing have been removed from the squad, pending police investigation.

But in order not to disrupt the competition calendar, the league decided to take over operations of the Marlins and let them continue playing.

Soccsksargen has lost 19 games by an average margin of 20 points.

According to MPBL commissioner Kenneth Duremdes, player replacements were handpicked by acting coach Manuel Torrabla from a list of players classified as free agents.

The list includes ex-Muntinlupa player Pari llagas, Jorem Morada who used to play for the Gensan Warriors and former Zamboanga Valiente JV Orera.

Other players include Jonathan Ballon (Pasig), Rustan Bugarin (Bacoor), Mico Estrellante (Davao Occidental), Mark Trinidad (Basilan Steel), Arden Guiyab (Pampanga), Jay Cabanog (Davao Occidental), and Jun Demapiles.

They joined Soccsksargen holdovers Spencer John Eman, Excell Neon Nocos, Anthony Timon and Hamsar Macantal.

“Binigay na namin ang responsibility sa coach, siya naman ang magpapalaro ng team so siya na ang in charge sa selection players. Siya ang mag assemble ng players na sa tingin niya pasok sa kanyang sistema,” said Duremdes.

The commissioner said the league will hand the squad over to a private financier as soon as an opportunity arises.

“Take over muna ang MPBL manage ng SOCCSKSARGEN, until such time may bagong magmamange ng team. The soonest na may makita kaming sponsor bigay na namin sa kanila,” he said.
