MANILA - For the first time this season, the San Miguel Beermen notched a victory against Columbian Dyip.
Import Dez Wells took charge down the stretch to power the Beermen to a 113-107 triumph over the Dyip in the 2019 PBA Governors' Cup, Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Wells scored 18 points in the fourth quarter, including 11 of San Miguel's last 13 points to overturn a double-digit deficit in the previous frame.
Jackson Corpuz had given Columbian a one-point lead, 95-94, with 4:46 to go, but Arwind Santos responded with a clutch three-pointer to give SMB the lead for good. It sparked a 12-0 run for the Beermen, capped by a pair of charities by Wells, for a 106-95 lead with 2:49 left to play.
San Miguel went on to lead by 12 points, 111-99, with 1:12 left off a Wells bucket.
The Beermen improved to 5-1, good for a share of second place in the league standings. They just need one more win to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.
Wells finished with 39 points and 9 rebounds, while June Mar Fajardo put up 19 points, 13 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Alex Cabagnot had 15 points, and Terrence Romeo marked his return from a two-game absence due to flu with 12 points.
Squandered in the defeat was Khapri Alston's 38-point, 25-rebound outing for Columbian Dyip. CJ Perez and Juami Tiongson each had 18 points in the loss.
The Dyip now have a 3-4 win-loss record. They had beaten San Miguel in their meeting in the All-Filipino and Commissioner's Cup, but could not make a clean sweep of the Beermen.
