MANILA, Philippines - Top Rank Promotions chief executive officer (CEO) Bob Arum is convinced that bantamweight champion Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire will be the next great superstar in boxing.

"I really believe that Nonito will be a major star in boxing. Everyone that follows boxing knows he is top pound-for-pound, but our goal is to make him a superstar," Arum said in an interview with

Donaire will defend his bantamweight belts against unbeaten Argentinian Omar Narvaez on October 22 at the Theater in Madison Square Garden. It will be Donaire's first bout since his demolition of Fernando Montiel last February.

Donaire's career was put on hold after a contract dispute with Top Rank and rival promotions Golden Boy. But with all issues now settled, Arum is determined to boost the Fil-Am boxer's career.

Arum brought Donaire's bout to New York City in an effort to introduce him to the Fil-Am population there.

"There are about 400,000 Filipinos living in the New York Metropolitan area, and besides there are a lot of great fight fans in New York and this gives them the opportunity to see this phenomenal fighter," Arum said, adding that he is sure they will be able to sell out the theater.

The promoter adds that Donaire will eventually become a great pay-per-view attraction.

"How long will that take? It is sort of silly to make a projection. It will come when it comes. When it comes it will launch him into the elite superstar category where he will make his money based on how many people follow him on pay-per-view," Arum said.
