MANILA - Gymnast Carlos Yulo and boxer Nesthy Petecio, who won in recent international competitions, are scheduled to pay courtesy visits to President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday, Malacañang said.
Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said the two athletes' victories underscored the need for government to fund sports programs.
“Dapat talaga pondohan ang sports. Ang dami kong naririnig na yung iba, tinatahi nalang nila yung uniform. Kawawa naman. I do not understand why we are not funding them,” Panelo said.
(We should fund sports programs. I hear a lot of things like athletes mending their uniforms. I pity them.)
Yulo bagged the gold medal in the men’s floor exercise Saturday in the 49th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships. He also qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics joining pole vaulter EJ Obiena.
A day after Yulo’s victory, Petecio clinched the gold medal in the 2019 AIBA Women’s Boxing World Championships.
Yulo will receive P500,000 under the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act and additional P500,000 reward as approved by the Philippine Sports Commission board Monday.
Petecio will receive P1 million for her gold medal win.
