MANILA, Philippines—Gilas Pilipinas made enough progress in its brief practice at Meralco Gym on Thursday night, with head coach Tim Cone touting the ease and speed with which the players pick up his system.
The national team practiced for just an hour and a half, as it had players who saw action in the 2019 PBA Governors' Cup on Wednesday, and others who will play on Friday.
"I was trying to recognize that fact, and we're not gonna push these guys too hard," Cone explained.
"So, we came in, just did a couple of things, and we did those things well, and they did it quickly, they understood it quickly, so we had a fast practice.
"We finished maybe in about an hour, an hour and 15, an hour and 30 minutes. That's our target."
This, to Cone, was the advantage of picking a team full of veterans. He was thrilled that all 15 members of the pool showed up to their second training session, and was impressed at how quickly they picked up the plays that they were running.
"Today, our key words were 'same-page mentality.' We wanna have a same-page mentality offensively, and even more so defensively," he said.
With all 15 players in the pool adhering to this, Cone is confident that the team can keep making progress even with just brief practices. The short nature of the training sessions also keeps them from overtaxing the players, something that Cone keeps in mind as the Governors' Cup is still ongoing.
"We're trying to be smart with our practices and make sure everybody participates. Because if everybody participates, that means we're all on the same page," he said.
