MANILA, Philippines – ALA (Antonio L. Aldeguer) Boxing promotions has tied up with ABS-CBN to produce a local boxing show named "Pinoy Pride."
ALA Promotions President Michael Aldeguer announced the deal during a press conference in Cebu, according to a report by Philboxing.com’s Salven Lagumbay.
"We have initially inked a three-event deal, but this is actually a long-term project that will give Filipino fans a chance to see world class boxing right here, instead of going to such high-profile places as Las Vegas," Aldeguer said in the report.
Among those who attended the press conference were ALA fighters AJ Banal, Mark Jason Melligen, Jason Pagara and Larry "Bon Jovi" Canillas and boxing trainers Edito Villamor, Edmund Villamor and Joseph Baldago.
Also present in the gathering were ALA marketing chief Dennis Canete and publicity officer Chad Canares.
"Pinoy Pride" will debut on October 30 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel. It will be headlined by Banal vs former two-division champ Luis Alberto Perez of Nicaragua.
"We feel this is the type of fight that AJ Banal needs for his career. Perez is a very dangerous fighter, and Banal will have to be in tremendous shape to be ready for this kind of challenge," said Aldeguer.
In the undercard will be Melligen, who takes on Mexican Bladimir Hernandez. Melligen, promoted by Top Rank, has been campaigning in the US.
"I have sparred with Floyd Mayweather Jr., Marcos Maidana and Devon Alexander. My confidence level is very hight right now," he said.
