Alex Diakhite was much too much for Adamson University to handle, at Mall of Asia Arena Saturday, as he willed University of the East to an 80-74 victory and the Red Warriors' first winning streak in UAAP 82 men's basketball.
The Senegalese big man tallied 29 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks, carrying the Red Warriors to their first back-to-back wins after a 1-5 start.
Diakhite had five points in the 17-6 run bridging the third and fourth quarters that erased a two-point deficit, 50-48, and gave UE a 65-56 lead.
Valandre Chauca and Jerrick Ahanmisi then shot Adamson to within, 69-68, inside the last six minutes only to see UE's 6-foot-8 powerhouse key a scoring binge that extended UE's lead to 77-71 with less than two minutes left.
That gap would stay until the final buzzer.
"We got lucky today. We got the breaks and the players refused to lose," UE active consultant Lawrence Chongson said.
