MANILA, Philippines -- Jethro Mendoza came alive in the fourth quarter and Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) bucked a slow start to stun University of Perpetual Help, 80-76, in the NCAA Season 95 tournament on Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The Generals snapped a 10-game slide last week with a 79-75 victory over San Sebastian College, and built on it by holding on against the Altas for their first winning streak of the season.

EAC improved to 3-11, while handing the Altas their fifth loss in a row.

"I told them the reason we won against San Sebastian is because we stuck to our game plan," EAC coach Oliver Bunyi said after the game. "Na-realize nila na we cannot win by talent and skills. We have to stick to the team concept."

Mendoza exploded for 22 points -- 13 of which came in the fourth quarter -- as he made 7 of his 13 shots including 5-of-9 triples. Kriss Gurtiza played through a knee strain to score 13 points, while JP Maguliano just missed a double-double with 11 points and 9 rebounds.

EAC trailed by as much as 14 points in the first quarter, and were down 24-13 after the opening frame.

But they steadily clawed away at the deficit, and were down by just a point, 55-54, heading into the payoff period. The Altas looked as though they were going to break the game open after scoring seven unanswered points, but Mendoza began to wax hot for the Generals.

His three-pointer sparked an 11-3 run that tied the game at 65, before Jielo Razon's lay-up gave the Altas back the lead, 67-65, with 4:54 to go. It turned out to be the last time that they got the lead, as Mendoza drilled another three-pointer to give EAC the advantage for good, 68-67.

Marwin Taywan added a lay-up, and Mendoza drilled another jumper for a 72-67 lead with 3:21 left. Shots by Rey Peralta and Razon kept the Altas in the game, but Mendoza and Taywan responded with buckets of their own to keep the Generals in control.

Peralta led the Altas with 21 points, while Edgar Charcos had 14 points and 11 rebounds. Perpetual Help dropped to 3-10 in Season 95.
