MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE) National University (NU) registered its first win of the UAAP Season 82 men's basketball tournament in impressive fashion, as the Bulldogs overpowered Far Eastern University (FEU), 61-39, on Wednesday afternoon at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Bulldogs shackled the Tamaraws all throughout the game, limiting FEU to a paltry 13 points in the first half en route to the 22-point win. Their 39-point output is FEU's lowest in the UAAP since 2003 and they shot just 18.99% in the game.

Dave Ildefonso led the way for NU with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting along with 8 rebounds, while Migs Oczon added 9 markers and Shaun Ildefonso had 8 points. Issa Gaye put up 7 points and 13 rebounds in the win.

"Every time we win, sila ang bida, hindi ako," said NU coach Jamike Jarin, who brought his entire team to the post-game interview. "They deserve all the credit."

NU settled for a 14-6 lead after the first quarter, but broke the game open in the second period when they outscored FEU, 23-7, for a comfortable 37-13 lead at the half. The Tamaraws were ice cold in the first two quarters, missing 30 of their 36 field goals and committing 11 turnovers that NU turned to 10 points.

The Bulldogs slowed down in the third frame, and Barkley Ebona did his best to bring the Tamaraws back into the fray. But the deficit was simply too much for the Tams, and NU had a response every time they threatened to cut down the lead.

FEU came to within 18 points, 49-31, with 6:26 left after a lay-up by LJ Gonzales. But JV Gallego drilled a three-pointer on the other end to restore a 21-point spread, and the Tamaraws were never able to mount a serious comeback.

"Sobrang happy kami kasi we got our first win," said Oczon. "To be honest, sobrang swerte namin, sobrang daming missed shots, libre na shots ang FEU."

"We just executed 'yung mga pinapagawa ng mga coaches namin," he added.

Ebona was the lone player in double-digits for FEU with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting, along with 12 rebounds. But the rest of the Tams could not buy a bucket, going a terrible 8-of-68 from the field.

NU improved to 1-5, while the Tamaraws absorbed their second straight loss and dropped to 2-4 in the season.
