MANILA, Philippines -- Far Eastern University (FEU) big man Barkley Eboña lamented their passivity that allowed National University (NU) to surge to a massive lead in their UAAP Season 82 game on Wednesday afternoon.
After trailing just 14-6 after the opening frame, the Tamaraws allowed the Bulldogs to explode for 23 points in the second period -- while scoring just seven points of their own. They fell behind, 39-13, at the half, and never managed to make a game out of it.
Eboña did his best to fire up the Tamaraws, as he ramped up his aggressiveness in the third quarter. The big man scored 8 points in the frame, but his intensity also came back to bite as he was called for three fouls in the quarter.
He fouled out in the fourth period and finished with 17 points, 12 rebounds, 3 blocks, and a steal. Eboña shot 7-of-11 from the field, a superb 63.64% rate.
But he was the only FEU player who scored in double-digits, and the only one who was efficient. The rest of the Tamaraws combined to shoot a sorry 8-of-68 from the field.
"Sayang, kasi ano, binigay ko lahat," said Eboña afterward.
"So, I'd rather choose na single-digits lang ako as long as we get the win di ba."
The loss was FEU's second straight of the tournament, dropping them to 2-4. They are already in a precarious position, sitting sixth in the league standings.
Eboña said they have to arrest their skid immediately, especially as they are looking at a return trip to the Final 4 this year.
"Try namin mag-bounce back kasi two straight in a row na kaming talo, so hindi pwedeng matalo pa kami sa pangatlo kasi kung gusto naming makapasok sa Final 4," he said. "Crucial itong last game namin sa first round."
"Dapat ipanalo namin ito. Dapat, magtulungan kami," he stressed.
The Tamaraws play Adamson University on Saturday.
