Sherwin Concepcion of UST puts up a shot against FEU. UAAP.

ANTIPOLO - (UPDATED) Sherwin Concepcion waxed hot in the third quarter to help University of Santo Tomas claim an 82-74 triumph over Far Eastern University in the UAAP Season 82 men's basketball tournament, Sunday at the Ynares Center here.

Concepcion drilled three straight three-pointers in the final two minutes of the pivotal third quarter, giving the Growling Tigers a 64-55 lead heading into the fourth period.

He finished with 12 points, while Beninese big man Soulemane Chabi Yo had 21 points and 15 rebounds in another superb performance for UST. Mark Nonoy (11), Renzo Subido (11) and Rhenz Abando (10) all reached double-digits as well.

It was a bounce back win for the Tigers, who had succumbed to Adamson University in their previous game after squandering a late lead. They improved to 4-2 in the tournament.

"That was a good game. Good way to bounce back. Masakit 'yung last namin na talo," said UST head coach Aldin Ayo.

"Lahat ng mali namin doon sa last game namin, we took them up during the practice, and we tried to correct those mistakes. We're just grateful na we're able to adjust kung ano 'yung mga pagkukulang namin doon sa last game, and we're just grateful for this win," he added.

UST trailed 39-34 at the half as FEU got off to a strong start, even leading by as much as 14 points behind the hot shooting of Ino Comboy and LJ Gonzales.

But the Growling Tigers opened the third quarter with seven straight points -- five from Chabi Yo -- to surge ahead, 41-39. FEU regained the advantage, 49-48, off a three-pointer by Joseph Nunag, but Subido, UST's veteran point guard, sparked another quick 7-0 run that gave them the lead for good.

Subido assisted on a Dave Ando lay-up, scored a bucket in transition, then drilled a three-pointer for a 55-49 advantage. Concepcion put the finishing touches on UST's 30-point third quarter by knocking down three straight triples.

The Tigers would maintain control all throughout the fourth frame, and led by 10 points, 75-65, with 2:47 left off a Chabi Yo jumper. FEU made its last stand off a lay-up by Comboy and a triple by Rey Bienes that made it a five-point game, 75-70, with still 58.7 seconds left.

But Barkley Ebona was called for an unsportsmanlike foul in the next possession against Subido. The UST point guard would make two free throws, and in their bonus possession, the Tams committed a foul on Ira Bataller who also made his shots. That gave UST a 79-70 lead with 51.8 ticks left, and they cruised from there.

Though UST shot only 35.3 percent from the field, they grabbed 14 offensive rebounds that led to 26 second chance points.

LJ Gonzales led FEU with 16 points, while Xyrus Torres had 14 points. Ebona added 11 points and 11 rebounds. Comboy finished with 10 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists.

The Tamaraws could not build on a previous victory to De La Salle University, and dropped to 2-3 this season.
