PBA: Meralco prevails, as Magnolia starts title defense with loss

Meralco asserted its might in the fourth quarter to come away with a 98-92 win over Magnolia in the 2019 PBA Governors' Cup at Araneta Coliseum on Saturday.

Allen Durham and Chris Newsome combined for 43 points for Meralco.

Newsome had 22, while Durham added 21. Raymund Almazan, who fired the go-ahead triple in the final minutes, finished with 19 points.

The Hotshots led by as many as 16, but squandered its advantage in the second half.

Ian Sangalang fired the jumper that gave Magnolia its last taste of the lead 92-86 midway in the final period. Meralco, however, responded with a 12-0 run.

Romeo Travis scored 22 points to lead Magnolia. Paul Lee chipped in 20 in the Hotshots’ losing effort.
