MANILA -- Filipino chess prodigy Wesley So halved the point with Ukrainian grandmaster Yuriy Kuzubov during his first round match in the SPICE CUP Chess Championship Saturday (Sunday in the Philippines) in Texas, USA.

The 15-year-old Filipino GM used the white pieces in splitting the point after 34 moves of Catalan Opening.

Other matches in the Group A division saw top seed Russian GM Dmitry Andreikin drawing with Norwegian GM Jon Ludvig Hammer. Last year’s Spice Cup co-champion GM Varuzhan Akobian also split the point with Azerbaijan GM Rauf Mamedov.

Torre, Villamayor score wins
In Manila, Filipino GMs Eugene Torre and Buenaventura “Bong” Villamayor swept all their matches in the rare ten board simultaneous exhibition last Friday at the SMX Convention Center at SM Mall of Asia.

The exhibition matches, dubbed as Buhawi and Hagibis Chess Challenge, saw La Salle Greenhills grade six pupil Matthew Luke de Leon testing his mettle against Torre.

Despite losing to Torre after 40 moves of Trompovsky Opening, De Leon was cited by organizing Diwa Learning System for being the best player in the competition.

De Leon received a gold medal for his impressive showing. Marlon Bernardino
