MANILA, Philippines – Kent Salado was unstoppable in the fourth quarter, and the Arellano University Chiefs claimed a thrilling 91-86 triumph over University of Perpetual Help for their third win of the NCAA Season 95 tournament, Thursday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Salado had 18 points, 12 assists, 4 steals, and 3 rebounds in the victory that snapped the Chiefs' 3-game losing skid and improved their record to 3-9.
He orchestrated the stunning 13-1 run that allowed the Chiefs to overhaul a 68-61 deficit in the fourth quarter, and go ahead 74-69. Salado scored two buckets off steals in that run, while assisting on a huge three-pointer for Alfren Gayoso and a bucket for Justin Arana.
Free throws by Rey Peralta and Ben Adamos got Perpetual within 2 points, 79-77, with still three minutes left, but Salado came through once more for Arellano as he assisted on a crucial bucket by Dariel Bayla.
The Chiefs went up, 84-79, off a free throw each from Bayla and Salado with 66 seconds to go, when the Altas made their final stand. Jielo Razon nailed a three-pointer, and after a quick bucket by Salado, Kim Aurin also drilled a triple of his own.
That made it a one-point game, 86-85, with still 42.7 seconds left.
But Perpetual was simply unable to stop Salado. The shifty guard found Art Oliva open for the dagger three-pointer with 32 seconds left, and then helped secure a stop in Perpetual's next possession. With the Altas taking too long to foul in the closing seconds, Salado capped his game by finding Arana for another wide-open lay-up.
Arana finished with 17 points and 7 rebounds, Bayla and Rence Alcoriza each had 12 points, while Archie Concepcion finished with 11 markers. The Chiefs shot a blistering 55.22% from the field for the game.
Edgar Charcos led Perpetual with 22 points, 9 assists and 5 rebounds, but was also responsible for half of their 16 turnovers. Peralta had 17 points, while Aurin and Razon each scored 15 markers.
The Altas absorbed their third straight loss to drop to 3-8.
