MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine men's national basketball team rose three spots in the FIBA World Rankings after their inspiring run in the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain.
Gilas Pilipinas is now ranked 31st in the world and fifth in Asia.
Gilas returned to the world stage after nearly four decades when they competed in the group stages of the World Cup in Seville.
They finished with a 1-4 record and failed to make it to the knockout round. Despite this, they still won the hearts of basketball fans worldwide with their entertaining style of basketball and remarkable fighting heart.
Gilas lost competitive games to higher ranked teams Croatia, Argentina and Puerto Rico, only losing to Greece by double-digits.
They made a breakthrough in their last game of the tournament when they defeated Senegal in overtime.
Meanwhile, the top four of the rankings remain unchanged, with the United States staying on top after retaining their World Cup title.
Hosts Spain, eliminated in the quarter-finals by France, are still at second place, followed by Argentina and Lithuania.
France, which finished in third place, rose three places to climb to fifth place.
