MANILA – Several triathletes are slated to race for a greater cause as they participate in the “7th Annual 12-Hour Multi-Sport Celebration in Memory of Gabriel” on Saturday.
The event, organized by Sen. Pia Cayetano, will feature individual running events, group and corporate relays, kids’ duathlon and triathlon, and an all-women’s triathlon.
Cayetano has been holding the multi-sport fundraising event since 2002 following the death of her only son, Gabriel Cayetano-Sebastian on Sept. 19, 2001.
Her fellow triathlete, Maiqui Dayrit, will raise pledges by finishing an Ironman distance in the 12-hour event. The distance consists of a 3.8-kilometer swim, 180-kilometer bike and 42-kilometer run.
In addition, an exhibition game of table tennis featuring visually impaired children supported by the Parents Advocate for Visually Impaired Children (PAVIC) will take place.
The registration fee paid by race participants will go directly to the event’s beneficiaries, according to a statement from Cayetano’s office.
The beneficiaries are PAVIC, Philippine National Ear Institute, Cancer Resource and Wellness Community (Carewell) Foundation, Philippine General Hospital Pediatric Neurosurgical and Craniofacial Operating Unit (PGH-PNCOU), and children with cleft lip and palate through “Operation Rainbow.”
“I consider this as the first birthday party that my son never had. We do this every year in remembrance of Gabriel and to celebrate how lives of underprivileged children are made better through him,” she said in a statement.
Gabriel, who only lived for nine months, was born with a cleft lip and palate. He was deaf and blind, and had an enlarged heart due to the chromosomal disorder, Trisomy 13.
Through the Gabriel Symphony Foundation, Cayetano raises funds to support children who have life-threatening diseases and are differently-abled.
The “7th Annual 12-Hour Multi-Sport Celebration in Memory of Gabriel” will be held from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Alabang Country Club, Ayala Alabang Village in Muntinlupa City.
