Without their full-time head coach and other staff, reigning champion San Juan Knights tapped former senator Jinggoy Estrada to call the shots and the move paid off. At least for one game.
Knights beat Basilan Steel 89-86 in the MPBL Lakan Cup at Olivarez College Gym in Parañaque on Friday, thanks to Estrada, a Knights supporter and former San Juan mayor.
According to Fox Sports Philippines, Estrada, a known basketball fan, took over in the absence of head coach Randy Alcantara and deputy Yong Garcia.
“Kasi may laro sila (Alcantara) kanina, I was here to help. Tutal nakakaintindi naman tayo ng basketball kahit papaano,” Estrada said.
“I think first acting-coach win ko ito.”
Andoy Estrella paced San Juan with 11 points.
With the win, San Juan improved to 12-1 to maintain its hold of first place in the team standings.
In the other games, Davao Occidental Tigers Cocolife brought down Gensan Warriors Burlington 84-75 while Parañaque Patriots overpowered Rizal Xentro Mall Golden Coolers 101-70.
