MANILA, Philippines – Lyceum of the Philippines University used a huge second half to pull away from University of Perpetual Help for an 89-74 win and take solo second place in the NCAA Season 95 men's basketball tournament on Thursday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Pirates settled for a slim 40-39 lead at the half but broke the game open in the third quarter, when they outscored the Altas 26-14.
Perpetual Help tried to rally in the fourth frame, coming to within 8 points, 68-60, with still 8:19 to play. But a bucket by Mike Nzeusseu and a triple by JC Marcelino pushed their lead to 13 points, 73-60.
The Altas last threatened when Ben Adamos made it a 10-point game, 75-65, with a three-pointer at the six-minute mark of the fourth. But the Pirates pushed the pace from there, as the Marcelino twins conspired with Nzeusseu and Raymar Caduyac to slam the door on Perpetual Help.
Caduyac assisted on an alley-oop lay-up for JC Marcelino, then fired a bounced pass to a trailing Nzeusseu for a slam dunk. A transition bucket by JV Marcelino completed a 10-0 Lyceum run that put them on top, 85-65, with four minutes left.
JC Marcelino finished with 21 points and 8 rebounds, while Nzeusseu had 21 points and 5 boards. Caduyac just missed a double-double with 11 points and 9 assists, while committing just one turnover in nearly 25 minutes of action.
The Pirates improved to 8-3 in the season, taking solo second place in the league standings just behind unbeaten San Beda University (10-0).
The Altas absorbed their second straight defeat to fall to 3-7 in the tournament. Rey Peralta led Perpetual Help with 20 points in a losing effort, while Adamos had 15 markers.
