(UPDATE) University of Sto. Tomas (UST) managed to pull off a tough 88-87 win against University of the East (UE) at the UAAP men's basketball tournament on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Despite several controversial calls involving ball possession in the dying seconds of the match, the Growling Tigers were able to hold on to a slim lead and offset a mighty comeback by the Warriors.

Renzo Subido shone the brightest among the Tigers with 26 points on nine of 16 field goal shooting to go with his four rebounds.

He carried the scoring load for UST, firing at least four triples starting from the second quarter.

Jon Sheriff and Marvin Lee added 15 and 14 points, respectively, as the Tigers gave coach Boy Sablan his first win in the UAAP.

RETURN OF THE COMEBACK. Renzo Subido turned in the best game of his his UAAP Seniors career nearly a year after suffering an ACL injury.

The Tigers fought back from a 15 point deficit before taking the lead with a 21-6 run on Subido’s cue. The rally had UST surging to a 78-66 advantage late in the third canto.

But the Red Warriors mounted a fight back that pulled them within 85-86 with 42 ticks to go.

Fortunately for the Tigers, Marvin Lee and Reggie Boy Basibas sank the free throw shots needed to keep UST afloat.

Nick Abanto and Bobon Batiller had 15 points each for UE, which also got 14 from Mark Olayon.

UE remained winless in two games.
