MANILA—Jamie Malonzo knew how to make statement in his debut game.
The 6-foot-7 forward who is to play just one season at La Salle introduced himself to the UAAP with a team-high 18 points to go with 10 rebounds, including a ferocious 2-handed jam on Thirdy Ravena in the first quarter.
Unfortunately, the Green Archers bowed to the defending champions, 81-69.
Malonzo described his debut in the collegiate league as “very emotional.”
“The fans and stuff probably got into my head,” Malonzo said. “I sort of let the emotions get the best of me but it’s just the game of basketball in itself and good play.”
He said it was really his intention to leave the United States and pursue his basketball career here.
“It felt great. I want to come in the Philippines and make a name for myself. It’s a good feeling that’s why I came,” Malonzo said.
Asked how he felt about his first game in the country?
“Very crazy,” he said, adding he loves the basketball atmosphere in Manila and the Filipino game is more physical.
Malonzo said his team anticipated a good Ateneo team coming into the game and insisted that the Green Archers were ready.
“We just lost our energy in the second quarter a little. Just fell off a little bit. But going to the further games, we’re gonna fix that,” Malonzo said.
