MANILA, Philippines – Filipino cue legend Efren "Bata" Reyes will serve as the captain of Team Asia in the first-ever Kings Cup, which will see them go up against the best players from Europe and the United States.
The tournament will be held on November 19-21 at the Resorts World Manila Casino & Hotel.
"Who else could be better than the greatest player of all time? Efren Reyes has a big track record of success in team events," said Charlie Williams of Dragon Promotions, the executive producer of the Kings Cup, in a statement on Monday.
"He's going to have an amazing supporting cast," Williams promised. "The West will have their hands full."
The Kings Cup will pit the men's champions of the Europe and the United States against the champions of Asia in a three-day event, and will follow the format of the successful Queens Cup.
Teams will play in versatile styles including singles, doubles, triples, and quadruples in each of the three days of competition.
Reyes is among the most successful and decorated players in Asia and in the world, having won the world 9-ball championship, the U.S. Open, the World Bank Pool, and in the Southeast Asian Games and Asian Games.
"Kung lalaban ako sa Pilipinas, higit na mas mataas ang inaasahan sa akin ng aking mga taga-hanga," said Reyes, also known as "The Magician."
"Maraming pwedeng mangyari sa aking laro. 'Yung ibang lahi na aking makakalaban, sigurado akong gustong-gusto nila akong talunin sa sarili kong bansa," he added.
"Alam kong isa akong target sa kanilang lahat."
