MANILA, Philippines (1st UPDATE) – Filipino-German goalkeeper Roland Mueller started training with the Philippine Azkals on Tuesday as the team began preparations for the upcoming Long Teng Cup.
ABS-CBN’s Dyan Castillejo reported that it is Mueller’s first time in the Philippines. He joined the Azkals' sessions at the Alabang Country Club on Tuesday morning.
The 23-year-old Mueller, second choice goalkeeper of German second division squad Duisburg, is one of the two Fil-German recruits who will beef up the Philippine football squad.
The other Fil-German is striker Kevin Ingreso, who will join the national team next year after getting clearance from his club Hamburg.
Accompanying Mueller in the Philippines is his mother, Maria.
“I haven't been back here for 19 yrs because of him at ngayon naman I came back because of him…proud talaga ako,” she said.
Castillejo, meanwhile, said the Philippine Azkals will still keep Filipino-British player Neil Etheridge as its first goalkeeper.
“Making it clear, Neil is still the first keeper,” she said through Twitter.
Coach Hans Michael Weiss is overseeing the training of both the national squad and the Under-23 team.
The country’s Under-23 team will compete in the upcoming Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in November.
