CEBU CITY -- The city government of Cebu honored Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Mary Joy Tabal during its National Heroes Day celebration Monday.
Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña encouraged his constituents to be modern-day heroes as the city recognized those who brought honor to the country.
Tabal was recognized for giving the country its first gold medal in this year's SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
According to Osmeña, it was not easy for Tabal to bring home the gold.
Tabal was born and raised in Cebu City, where her skill in running was first recognized.
The city government gave Tabal a P100,000 reward and an additional P500,000 financial aid for her training for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Thanking everyone for their support, Tabal promised to strive harder to bring more recognition to Cebu and the country.
Crisanto Amoranto, a pizza company employee who was killed by robbers for helping their female victim, was also recognized as a modern-day hero.
Amoranto's parents received the award for him.
