San Miguel looked rusty for all of three quarters.
Despite engaging Globalport in a shootout, the Beermen still managed to come out on top, beating the Batang Pier in a close 115-112 decision Friday at the Big Dome in the 2017 PBA Governors' Cup.
Playing its first game since August 4, it took a whil before San Miguel started to pick things up.
Behind its usual high-powered offense, Globalport controlled the game almost all throughout, taking multiple 12-point leads against the Beermen.
However, Arwind Santos and import Wendell McKines would spark a rally in the second half for San Miguel as the Beermen went on a 12-0 run to tie things up a 76-all.
Both Santos and McKines scored 13 points apiece in the third period as San Miguel finally took over heading into the fourth.
Using one lst puch, the Beermen took their largest lead of the night at nine, 110-101, before holding on to take a three-point victory.
"I'm a little bit worried with this game because we haven't taken advantage of our three-week break. Even though the players played sluggish, we were able to come out as winners and I'm happy for them," head coach Leo Austria said.
With June Mar Fajardo still playing limited minutes, McKines continued to carry San Miguel, going for 35 points on top of 14 rebounds and seven assists.
Santos wasn't too bad himself, adding another 30 points, 21 coming from deep, to go along with eight rebounds and five blocks. Alex Cabagnot scored 27 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and dished out four assists for the now 3-1 Beermen.
The Batang Pier, who dropped to 2-3, got 26 points from the returning Terrence Romeo while import Murphey Holloway added another 25. Stanley Pringle also sizzled on offense, scoring 24 markers.
