Jordan Clarkson won over the hearts and minds of Filipino basketball fans with a dazzling debut as part of the men's national team.

Not long after, Hidilyn Diaz won the country's first gold in these Asian Games in Jakarta.

It was an action-packed Tuesday afternoon for the Philippine delegation that entertained supporters courtesy of Clarkson and the basketball side that gave China a good fight before losing 82-80.

Clarkson finished with a game-high 28 points, including a 16-point outburst in the third quarter that put China on notice.

Minutes after the basketball players drew applause for their efforts, Diaz earned praise for her finishing the job in weightlifting.

Her gold in the women's 53-kilograms competition was her first in the continental multisport event and the country's first in these Games. It comes 2 years after she won Olympic silver in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

In the morning, Pauline Lopez provided the first good news of the day with a bronze medal in the women's -57 kilograms event in taekwondo.

The other Philippine teams suffered setbacks in the afternoon, though, both inflicted by Japan.

Alyssa Valdez and her crew fell 25-12, 25-15, 25-21, while the Blu Girls lost 11-1.
