MANILA, Philippines -- University of Perpetual Help has tapped Myk Saguiguit as the interim head coach of its men's basketball team, after placing Frankie Lim on "leave."
Jonas Kintanar, meanwhile, will call the shots for the Junior Altas.
Perpetual Help athletic director Sammy Acaylar confirmed the development on Tuesday as the Altas were playing their first game without Lim in the NCAA Season 95 men's basketball tournament.
Lim was placed on leave following Perpetual Help's 102-56 rout at the hands of defending champion San Beda Red Lions last week. Acaylar did not provide a reason for the decision, insisting it was Perpetual's "top management" that made the call.
"So the reason behind, hindi ko alam kasi management naman ang nag-decision," Acaylar said.
"All we have to do is, as athletic director, with my colleague Frank Gusi, follow the instruction of the top management na sabihan si Coach Frankie na on leave muna siya," he added.
When asked if Lim was still in any way attached to the team, however, Acaylar answered in the negative.
"Actually, hindi na. Kasi 'yun ang decision ng management namin kaya hindi na siya attached sa team namin," he said.
In the meantime, Saguiguit and Kintanar will take charge of their basketball programs.
"We're focusing on the practice, lalo na ako kasi binigay sa akin 'yung authority to monitor the training, the practice, so doon muna ako nagfo-focus. Kasi we don't like na 'yung mga bata natin naaapektuhan," said Acaylar.
Lim, who led San Beda to four NCAA titles, steered the Altas to the Final 4 last year behind an MVP-season from Prince Eze.
But the Altas have disappointed in Season 95, only compiling a 2-5 win-loss record.
