MANILA – Mac Belo took over for Phoenix in the second half to help the Accelerators hold off Tanduay, 84-76, in Game 1 of the 2016 PBA D-League Foundation Cup Finals on Thursday at the Alonte Sports Arena in Biñan, Laguna.

Belo scored 27 of his game-high 30 points in the second half, while also adding 14 rebounds and three assists to lift his team to a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.

"He refused to give up," said Phoenix coach Eric Gonzales of Belo.

It was far from a straightforward victory for the Accelerators, however, as they had to overcome a sluggish first half that saw Tanduay pounce on them inside the paint.

Belo sparked a 10-0 run midway through the fourth quarter to turn a 66-67 deficit into a commanding 76-67 advantage with 3:17 left to play.

"Ang pep talk namin kanina is, it depends kung sino ang uhaw," Gonzales revealed. "Sabi kasi ni (Tanduay) coach Lawrence (Chongson), mas uhaw daw ang Tanduay."

"I challenge 'yung mga bata to show it on the court," he added.

Roger Pogoy added 22 points, six rebounds and three assists, while Mike Tolomia contributed 12 points, six assists, and three rebounds. Phoenix outscored Tanduay, 22-6, on second chance points.

Now just one win away from another title, Phoenix can wrap up the series on Tuesday at the Strike Gym in Bacoor, Cavite.

Reden Celda finished with 15 points, four rebounds, and three assists, while Rudy Lingganay had 13 points, four assists, and three rebounds in a losing effort for Tanduay.
