MANILA – The Mapua Cardinals made it two wins in a row after fending off Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC), 76-66, in the NCAA Season 95 men's basketball tournament on Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Cyril Gonzales scored 13 points, Paolo Hernandez added 11 markers, and Laurenz Victoria scored 10 as the Cardinals pulled away from the Generals with a huge third quarter.
Mapua was ahead 35-27 at the half, before exploding for 25 points in the third frame to pull away. On the other end, they limited the Generals to just 12 points.
Victoria accounted for 7 points in the frame as the Cardinals seized control and never looked back.
Mapua shot 46.5% from the field, and had a 42-35 edge in rebounding. They would lead by as much as 25 points in the contest, before EAC made a late run to make the final margin more respectable.
The game was already well in hand for Mapua when Jasper Salenga was thrown out with 22.5 seconds left, after committing a disqualifying foul on JC Luciano.
Then, with just 1.5 seconds to play, Joaqui Garcia of Mapua was also called for an unsportsmanlike foul.
Luciano led EAC with 12 points and 7 rebounds, while JP Maguliano had 10 points and 6 boards.
The Generals absorbed their fifth straight loss to drop to 1-6 this season.
Meanwhile, Mapua improves to 2-5.
