MMA: Chance to fight ex UFC king Demetrious Johnson thrills Danny Kingad

Danny Kingad acknowledged that he’s excited to be facing former UFC champion Demetrious Johnson in the ONE Flyweight Grand Prix final.

“The King” hurdled a tough match against Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black-belt Reece McLaren to set himself up for the final match with Johnson, who beat Tatsumisu Wada in the other semifinal.

What’s astounding was Kingad’s determined effort to beat McLaren in his own game.

Kingad is essentially a striker, but he showed his improved grappling game, especially during the final round where he was more assertive.

“There was an opportunity. I got his legs, that was my opportunity to take him down,” Kingad said.

“Even though he's a black belter, I do have my own ground game.”

Kingad said he was also motivated by the cheers he got from Filipino fans at Mall of Asia Arena.

“When I heard them cheering me, I focused on my game plan,” he said. “They give me power and motivation.”

Moving forward to his match against Johnson, Kingad said he relishes the opportunity to be fighting one of the best MMA fighters pound-for-pound.

“I'm very excited that he won his bout (against Wada). He's a champion. I'm happy I'll be facing him next,” Kingad said.
