Now that Danny Kingad has reached the finals of the ONE Flyweight Grand Prix Tournament, he will be having the biggest fight of his career facing former UFC champion Demetrious Johnson.
Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao acknowledged the need for a fool-proof game plan to help Kingad handle someone like Johnson.
“We have to be very careful talaga at pag-aralan nang husto. We’ll discuss this with the team, help Danny. Of course, nandyan si Kevin (Belingon) para ma-prepare natin ang susunod na laro,” said Sangiao.
Kingad made it to the finals by eking out a split-decision win against Reece McLaren, while Johnson gutted out a tough win against Yuya Wakamatsu in the other semis pairing.
“Ang lamang dito ni Danny malakas pa siya at batang-bata. Pero ’wag nating kalimutan na Demetrious is an intelligent fighter, well-rounded at alam natin na pound-for-pound champion,” said Sangiao.
Johnson himself watched how Kingad beat McLaren and saw things that he could find useful when they trade strikes in the finals.
“Obviously, Reece McLaren is trying to force Dan into grappling and I felt like if Reece did a couple of things different I think he will have more success but he didn't,” said Johnson.
