MANILA, Philippines -- Jose Rizal University (JRU) made it two wins in a row in impressive fashion, as the young Heavy Bombers held on for a 71-66 triumph over University of Perpetual Help in the NCAA Season 95 men's basketball tournament.
Leaning on their young core, the Heavy Bombers claimed a second consecutive triumph by fending off the Altas' last-ditch rally in their first-round encounter.
With the win, the Bombers improved to 2-3, while the Altas dropped their third straight game and now have a 1-3 win-loss record.
"We really gained confidence sa win namin last game," said JRU coach Louie Gonzales, referring to their 80-77 triumph over Arellano University last Friday.
"Entering this game, we are more relaxed, but I made sure na hindi kami mawala sa focus at direksyon na gusto namin," he addedd.
Rookie forward John Amores led the way for the Heavy Bombers with 15 points, while Ry dela Rosa, Marq Dionisio, and Stefan Steinl each had 12 markers. Rookie point guard JL Delos Santos had 7 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals in a solid all-around outing.
JRU had a 41-28 lead at the half, before Kim Aurin and Edgar Charcos conspired to bring the Altas back in it in the third quarter. Perpetual Help was down by just four points, 56-52, and trailed by just three points, 56-53, after Jeff Egan split his charities off an unsportsmanlike foul by Steinl.
The game was paused for nearly 10 minutes due to issues with the shot clock, and it was JRU who came out of the lull with more aggression. The Heavy Bombers unleashed a 13-2 run, anchored by two three-pointers from dela Rosa, to push ahead 69-55.
The Altas responded with an 11-2 run, with Aurin scoring 7 points to spur them on. But the Heavy Bombers stood firm defensively in the final minute, forcing misses from Jielo Razon and Ben Adamos to hold on for the win.
Aurin finished with 14 points, while Edgar Charcos and Rey Peralta each had 13 markers for the Altas. But Perpetual Help could not quite recover from their poor performance in the first half, as the Heavy Bombers won in wire-to-wire fashion.
JRU shot 46.67% from the field and limited Perpetual to just 39.68% shooting, while also claiming a 41-30 lead in rebounds.
