MANILA - San Miguel's Terrence Romeo and NorthPort's Nico Elorde were both given technical fouls after a flare-up early in the fourth quarter of their 2019 PBA Commissioner's Cup quarterfinal game on Sunday.
Elorde, tasked to defend the explosive Romeo, appeared to frustrate the San Miguel guard after getting a couple of stops. They butted heads during a dead ball situation with 8:48 left, leading to technical fouls. Afterward, Romeo would get called for warding off on Elorde while driving to the hoop, and was immediately called for another foul on the other end of the floor.
Romeo would be subbed out with 8:04 left, with six points to his credit. He did not return as SMB hacked out a 98-84 win to stay alive in the conference.
"Wala, wala. Part lang naman ng game 'yun. Alam naman natin na ganoon naman talaga ako dumepensa. So wala, palaban siya, palaban din ako. So walang aatras," Elorde said of his encounters with Romeo.
"Part naman ng game 'yun eh. Ganoon lang talaga ako mag-laro," he stressed. "Wala, hindi ako aatras kahit kanino. Kasi, wala, ano lang namin 'to, trabaho, kailangan namin manalo."
Romeo was clearly incensed as he left the floor and was seen talking back at some fans. He was more composed after the game, however, and like Elorde he stressed that all their trash talk was simply part of the game.
"Ako, wala namang problema sa'kin eh. Lahat ng nangyayari sakin sa court, iniiwan ko lahat sa court -- kahit na magkatirahan magkasikuhan or what, no problem. Part ng game yun eh," he said.
"May mga asaran talaga, part din ng game yun. May napipikon, pag napikon yung player, part din ng game yun. Emotions yun e. Kumbaga, nangyayari talaga sa games yun -- sa lahat ng games," he added.
Still, Romeo acknowledged that he could have handled the situation better.
"Matututo din ako dun. Kailangan matuto ako dun sa mga ganung pangyayari, na dapat mas magiging matured ako, mas di ko na dapat pinapatulan yung mga ganung bagay," he added.
Romeo and Elorde will meet again on Wednesday, as they both eye a spot in the semifinals.
"May chance pa kami," said Elorde, whose team owned a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarters after finishing as the second seed.
"Hindi pa naman tapos 'yung basketball. Kailangan lang maging ready kami kung ano man 'yung resulta, ganyan, 'yung tawagan, basta ready lang kami," he added.
