Pacquiao would have KO'd Thurman 5 years ago, says analyst
If Keith Thurman wasn’t much of a trash talker, Manny Pacquiao would have been more forgiving.
But the erstwhile undefeated American fighter heaped all sorts of insults on Pacquiao prior to their fight this weekend and, in the end, got himself badly bruised.
Boxing referee Danrex Tapdasan believes that trash talk eventually got under the skin of Pacquiao, who dished him a first-round knockdown en route to a split-decision win.
“Tingin ko 'yung trash talking ni Thuman affected Pacquiao. If Keith Thurman did not do all the trash talking, Pacquiao would have boxed him in circles,” said Tapdasan during their live coverage of the bout in DZMM.
He said the usually calculated Pacquiao took a gamble by chasing a backpedaling Thurman, who was forced to step back after getting hit with a left straight to the gut. Pacquiao, who is 10 years older than his opponent, followed it up with a right hook that felled Thurman.
It was a risky move by Pacquiao said Tapdasan, but it made the fight more interesting.
“Hindi dapat sumusugod si Manny, hindi dapat niyang sinasalubong ang suntok ni Keith Thurman. But it would have been a little bit of a boring fight (otherwise),” said Tapdasan.
He also said that the bout would have ended in the first round if Thurman fought a prime Pacquiao.
“If that was 5 years ago. Keith Thurman in the first round, knocked out na ‘yun,” said Tapdasan.
Prior to their WBA "super" welterweight title bout, Thurman bashed Pacquiao by saying he's the shorter fighter with "T-rex arms."
He also said he will retire the 8-division champion in the same manner Pacquiao retired boxing great Oscar dela Hoya.
After beating Thurman, Pacquiao said it was all under the bridge now citing that the American only did the talking to "promote the fight."
