MANILA - Triathlete Nikko Huelgas, a two-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, celebrated his 29th birthday in a special way.
Huelgas, also the chairman of the Philippine Olympic Committee's Athletes' Commission, distributed more than 200 packed Chooks-to-Go meals to the frontliners and the needy in his hometown of Las Piñas.
While it is not the first time that Huelgas has marked his birthday in this manner, this celebration is extra special as there are plenty of people in his hometown who have struggled to make ends meet due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Lahat tayo apektado ngayong pandemya. Kaya ngayong kaarawan ko, naisipan kong mamahagi ng saya at kalusugan kasama ng Chooks-to-Go," said Huelgas, who won SEA Games gold in 2015 and 2017.
Huelgas personally distributed the packed meals on Saturday morning and thanked the frontliners for their service to the country during the health crisis.
"Araw-araw ko silang nakikita na kahit umulan man o umaraw, hindi sila tumitigil sa pagtulong sa amin dito sa Las Piñas. Maliit lang na tulong ito kumpara sa serbisyo na ginagawa nila para sa bayan," said Huelgas.
