MANILA, Philippines -- Colegio de San Juan de Letran recovered from a slow start to take down the Jose Rizal University (JRU), 55-43, in the NCAA Season 95 men's basketball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan on Tuesday afternoon.

It was Letran's second straight triumph after a breakthrough win over Arellano University last week, giving them a 2-1 win-loss record.

"'Yung depensa, not bad," said Letran coach Bonnie Tan, as his team limited JRU to just 28.07% shooting in the game.

"But we struggled on our errors. So, 'di namin nakuha 'yung gusto namin, na ma-lessen ang errors based sa first two games namin. Andoon pa rin, so we have to regroup," he added.

The Knights led by just five points, 11-6, after a slow, low-scoring first quarter. But they put up 19 points in the second frame to take control, 30-17, heading into the break.

The Heavy Bombers managed to get to within eight points, 41-33, after the third period thanks to the efforts of Ry dela Rosa, but they would get no closer.

Paolo Javillonar gave the Knights a huge boost off the bench, as he scored six points in the first two minutes of the payoff period to push Letran ahead, 47-35. The Heavy Bombers would not threaten again.

"Yung game plan was to play 40 minutes of tough, good defense," said Tan. "Sila naman din, they delayed us with their halfcourt defense. Talagang low-scoring 'yung ball game."

Bonbon Batiller scored all 14 of his points in the first half, while adding 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Ato Ular added 8 points, while Javillonar finished with 7 points in just 6 minutes of playing time.

The Knights shot 43.14% from the field, and had a 44-29 rebounding edge. They did commit 24 turnovers that JRU converted to 18 points.

The Heavy Bombers dropped to 0-3 in the tournament.
