MANILA– Newly crowned Philippine Superliga (PSL) All-Filipino Conference champions Petron Blaze Spikers are set to represent the country in the Macau Invitational Women’s Volleyball Tournament, the league’s top official announced.
A day after sweeping the F2 Logistics Cargo Movers, PSL president Ramon Suzara bared that Blaze Spikers were handpicked to join the international tournament from September 23 to 25. China, Hongkong and Macau will also field their respective teams.
Suzara, also a member of the Asian Volleyball Confederation, said the Macau Invitational would be a boost to the development of the volleyball program in the Philippines.
“For winning the All-Filipino (crown), it is only fitting that we appoint Petron as our representative in the Macau tournament,” said Suzara, adding that the tourney would also serve as Petron’s preparation for the Grand Prix.
This would be the second time for Petron to carry the Philippine flag in an international competition after donning the national colors in the AVC Asian Women’s Club Championship in Phu Ly, Vietnam in 2015.
“We are very confident that Petron will be very competitive based on how it fared in the finals series against F2 Logistics. I’m sure they will play hard and make the country and the league very proud,” said Suzara.
Petron marched in the recent Finals series in high morale, crushing F2 Logistics in straight sets in Game 1, 25-23, 25-21, 25-19, to move closer to the crown.
Although threatened by the Cargo Movers in Game 2, Blaze Spikers proved that they were the hungrier team, running away with a thrilling 26-24, 24-26, 26-24, 23-25, 15-11 victory to dethrone the opponent.
Petron coach Shaq Delos Santos said the team's journey to greatness would not end with an All-Filipino crown.
