MANILA - Filipino athlete EJ Obiena showed might in the 2019 Summer Universiade as he ruled the men's pole vault event in record fashion to give the Philippines its first gold medal in Italy.
Obiena shattered the Philippine record of 5.71 meters, which he also set in April 2019, with a 5.76-meter performance in Naples en route to reaching the top podium in the competition.
The country's top vaulter beat Germany's Torben Blech, who settled for silver, and bronze medalist Ben Broeders of Belgium (5.51 meters).
Obiena first captured the gold in the 2019 Asian Athletics Championship in Doha, Qatar on April 21 after jumping at the 5.71 meter mark.
The Filipino athlete is currently ranked 13th in the world after the competition, according to the International Association of Athletics Federations website.
