MANILA, Philippines – Centro Escolar University (CEU) improved its chances of advancing to the semifinals of the 2018 PBA D-League Foundation Cup following an 84-75 triumph over Batangas-EAC on Thursday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Orlan Wamar had 17 points, eight assists, and six rebounds as the Scorpions stung the Generals to earn a share of third place along with Marinerong Pilipino-TIP.

Both CEU and Marinero currently tote identical 4-3 win-loss records.

“This is a very important game for us,” said CEU acting coach Derrick Pumaren. “There’s a lot at stake, and we have not beaten Batangas.”

“I think we were able to come out and be very active defensively. Overall, I’m happy with the way the boys played, but we could be better,” he added.

Pierce Chan had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Judel Fuentes contributed 12 points and seven boards.

Cameroonian big man Gilles Oloume just missed out on a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds, while adding four blocks for the Scorpions.

CEU also atoned for its shock 96-90 loss to Batangas-EAC last June 11.

However, the game was far from a straightforward affair as the Scorpions squandered a 19-point lead.

Batangas-EAC came to within five points, 80-75, courtesy of back-to-back buckets from Michael Mabulac with still 53.5 seconds to play.

Oloume came to the rescue for CEU as he scored a bucket from down low to ice the game for the Scorpions.

Mabulac had 27 points and 14 rebounds but could not keep the Generals from falling to its fourth defeat against three victories.

The scores:

CEU 84 – Wamar 17, Chan 13, Fuentes 12, Oloume 11, Formento 10, Intic 8, Guinitaran 5, Rojas 4, Uri 4, Ke. Caballero 0, Ko. Caballero 0.
