Dad gave tips to son via Facebook
MANILA, Philippines – Cebuano boxer Mercito "No Mercy" Gesta won his 22nd bout last Sunday in impressive fashion, knocking out his Mexican opponent, Jorge Pimentel, in 3 rounds.
Gesta has credited his family, especially his father, for his success inside the boxing ring.
"Mercito was born in the gym, literally," trainer Vince Parra said to Examiner.com. "His old house is the gym, and he was born there." [https://www.examiner.com/filipino-sports-in-national/gesta-delighted-to-make-his-father-proud-with-his-victory-dsource-interview#ixzz1RkuviCMg]
Mercito's father, Anecito, was his first trainer.
"His dad is tireless and a disciplinarian. The guy is a warrior, so he would work Mercito, and have him do everything correctly," Parra added.
"I'm blessed to have a family like the one that I have, that constantly gives me advice, especially my dad," Gesta said. "They are the main reasons for my success."”
Gesta said that he hopes to bring his father to the United States.
"I hope one day, maybe for my championship fight, he can see me fight," Gesta said.
Meanwhile, Gesta's whole neighborhood came together to celebrate his victory.
Gesta's parents said that they found out of their son’s win through Facebook.
Gesta’s mother, Mercedes, admits that she felt scared for her son.
"Natakot talaga ako, pero normal naman siguro yun. Malaki din naman ang tiwala ko sa kanya, na mananalo s'ya," Mercedes said.
Meanwhile, Gesta's father, Anecito, expressed his pride and happiness over his son’s triumph.
"Masayang masaya ako," he said. Anecito added that he gave his son some advice before the bout.
"Bago ang laban, nag-message ako sa kanya sa Facebook na wag kalimutan ang jab, kasi epektibo talaga ang jab," Anecito said. With a report from Carine Asutilla, ABS-CBN News Central Visayas
